Jekyll Island Wildlife

Local Wildlife Species

The natural beauty of Jekyll Island is largely undisturbed and preserved with acres of wilderness that is home to a variety of species that call it home. Respect all wildlife and do your part to protect their habitat. Jekyll Island is a Georgia State Park, and it is unlawful to feed, harass, approach, injure or remove any wildlife. For any questions or concerns regarding wildlife on Jekyll, please contact the Jekyll Island Wildlife Response department at 912.222.5992.

Snakes

There are two species of venomous snakes to be found on Jekyll, including rattlesnakes and cottonmouths. These snakes are not common in most areas where people can be found. However, you should respect all natural areas that could potentially be home to either of these species. If you come upon a snake, do not approach it and move carefully away from it. These creatures do not like confrontation and will typically move on if you give it space and do not provoke it.

Alligators

Sightings of these are rare but not unheard of on Jekyll, due to its plentiful marshlands and natural wooded areas. You should practice awareness when venturing near these areas and especially around open water. Do not feed or approach an alligator of any size. These animals are quite fast and can be dangerous should you confront one unexpectedly or get too close. Always respect their space and never attempt to retrieve a golf ball that has fallen in water or near an alligator or their territory.

Deer

Many deer make Jekyll Island their home, and these nocturnal creatures can often be seen in the evening or early morning. Riverview Drive is an area that is commonly populated with large concentrations of deer, so drive slowly and cautiously during these hours. Do not feed, disturb or approach them.

Rabbits

The Ben Fortson Parkway leading to Jekyll Island is home to thousands of wild rabbits that make their home near the marshlands and surrounding vegetation. Visitors to the island can spot these creatures all along the roadway during the warm weather months. Use caution when driving and avoid leaving the roadway or venturing into their territory.
